How to Repair Sliding Screen Doors

Adjusting and Repair a Sliding Screen Door

Introduction:

Like all doors sliding screen doors need occasional adjustments and repairs to keep them working smoothly. When a sliding screen doesn’t work correctly, the problem is usually that the rollers have come off the track or the door is rubbing on the track rather than rolling on the rollers. In most cases you can adjust the rollers without removing the screen door but in some cases it must be removed. Repairing and adjusting a screen door is an easy DIY task for most home owners.

Adjusting a sliding screen door:

  1. Insure that the door track area is clean of all debris.

  2. If the track needs lubrication use a small amount of WD40 on a cloth and wipe the track along its length. Do not leave excess lubricant on the screen track because it will attract dust and dirt. The track should be cleaned and lubricated at least quarterly.

  3. Screen door 1To adjust the rollers use a common screwdriver to turn the screw. There are two adjustment screws, one on each end of the screen door. Turn the screws clockwise to raise the screen door or counter clockwise to lower it. Adjust the screen until it travels smoothly along the track.

  4. If the track is bent, use a block of wood and a mallet to straighten it.

Removing the screen door:

  1. Screen door 2Removing the screen door is quite easy. Simply lift the tabs on both sides of the door and remove the screen outward. Be careful not to damage the screen.

  2. Lay the screen on sawhorses to inspect and repair.

  3. Inspect the roller mechanism for damaged rollers.

  4. Replace any damaged roller. Replacement rollers can be obtained from the window supplier or the manufacturer.

  5. Reinstall the screen door by lifting the roller tabs and slide the door into position.

That is how to repair sliding screen doors. If the door does not slide smoothly lubricate the tract.
