How to Repair a Doorbell That Does Not Ring

Testing and Repair a Doorbell Button

Introduction:

It isn’t very often that a door bell fails but when they do fail it is rather annoying not being aware when someone is at your door seeking your attention. Rapping on the door may get your attention but if you are not close to the door it is unlikely that you will hear the rapping. Of course no one wants to miss salesmen calling! Troubleshooting and repairing a doorbell is an easy DIY project.

Troubleshooting your doorbells:

1.    When you push the doorbell button and you don’t hear a bell, a hum or even a click it is often means that electric power has been interrupted in the system.

2.    Check for a tripped circuit breaker for being tripped.

3.    Check the power going to the transformer with a multi meter.

4.    Insure that all wires are securely connected to transformer, bell chimes box and button.

5.    The button is the primary moving part of the door bell system and tends to be the most likely component to fail. To check the button remove the attachment screws and gently remove the button. Be sure the two wires are connected securely to the screw terminals. Touch a screwdriver blade across both terminals to see if the door bell will ring.

6.    If the bell rings remove the wires and clean any corrosion from the button's contacts and wire ends with fine sandpaper or electrical contact cleaner.

7.    Reconnect the wires. If the button still does not work remove and replace the button.

8.    If the button is not faulty, perform a continuity check with an ohmmeter. Before performing an ohm check turn off the power at the circuit breaker.

9.    Hold one of the meter probes on each of the button contacts, and then push and release the button. The meter needle should bounce up when the button is pushed and drop flat when it is released. If it doesn't the button should be replaced.

10.If the doorbell ohm check is okay check the system voltage at the doorbell transformer. Close the circuit breaker and check for power across the terminals of the transformer. Ensure that the multi meter is on the DC 25 volt scale. Voltage should be between 12 -16 volts. If it is not replace the transformer

That is how to repair a doorbell that does not ring.
