How to Install a Pre-hung Window

Installing Windows

Introduction:

Most windows purchased today are pre-hung windows. This means that they come already assembled in a frame. This makes the DIY homeowner job of installing a window much easier. Other than getting the rough opening size correct and placing the window level in the opening you really can’t go wrong. If you don’t feel confident about taking on this task on your own, consult a DIY coach or a qualified window installer.

Here are some general instructions for how to install a pre-hung window. These directions may vary slightly from product to product depending on the manufacturer. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when installing pre-hung windows.

Preparing the rough opening:

From inside your house, decide where you wish to place your new window and mark the location. You can do this by drilling a small hole through the wall at each corner and then inserting long nails through the holes so that they poke through to the exterior of your house. Then use a level to draw lines to mark the perimeter of the window opening.

From the outside, cut through the sheathing and siding using the lines as a guide. Remove drywall from inside. Insure that there is no electrical wiring or plumbing lines in the area where you are going o cut.

Note

If the wall is a load bearing wall you will have to install a header above the opening. If the wall is a gable end wall it is most likely not a load bearing wall.

Place your window into the opening to verify that it will fit. Remove additional material if necessary.

Install water resistant barriers around the window.  Place the barrier around the edges of the opening and tuck them inside and staple them in place.

Mount the window in the opening from the outside. Insure the window is centered and leveled.  If necessary, insert shims along the sides, top and bottom of the window to level it. Secure the window to the opening by nailing the nailing strip to the building. If there is no window nailing strip secure the window by driving nails into the windows exterior brick molding or casing.

Install exterior siding as may be required.

On the inside, stuff the area around the widow frame with installation and install the interior window trim to complete the window installation.

That is how to install a pre-hung window.
