Bay and Bow Windows

Bay and Bow Window Designs

Introduction:

Modern bay and bow windows came during the era of Victorian architecture of the mid to late nineteenth century. In today’s home construction bay windows are used in many different housing designs including modern and traditional. Basically, a bay window is a window that projects outward from the main walls of a room in the house. The projection may include the floor layout itself being projected outward or just the window.

Bay window designs can be square, polygonal or semicircular. In modern housing they are more often square. Bay windows are associated with the Victorian architecture of the nineteenth century.

Bay windows provide the illusion that the room is larger. They are used to increase the flow of natural light and provide views of the outside that are unavailable with an ordinary window. Often they are designed with a window seat or storage cabinets underneath the seat.

The makeup of a bay window is usually a series of three windows. There are two windows that are placed on angles, 30 to 45 degree projecting from the house with a third window that ties the two angled windows together. The center sash is usually fixed (non-operative) the two angle windows are compatible casement or double-hung windows.

Because a bay window projects outward from the house it has its own small roof or covering. The roof is often covered either with regular shingles or copper.

The semicircular bay window is very popular in modern home construction. Most manufacturers refer to the semicircular bay window as a bow window. Bay and bow windows are manufactured as complete pre-assembled units that are easy to install in a rough window opening. They are made from wood, vinyl and aluminum.

The bay and bow windows are great accent features in home design from the outside or the inside of the house. They do permit additional natural light and enhance visibility, particularly along the side of the building that is restricted from view with regular windows.
