Replacing a Door Tips

Replacing a Door

Introduction:

From time to time a door panel may become damaged and need replacement. If the door is an exterior door or an interior door, the technique of replacing it is relatively the same. Hanging a wooden door in an existing door frame is an easy DIY task but it must be done carefully and correctly to a good fit and avoid uneven gaps in the space around the door and insure that the door operates smoothly and latches correctly. The following replacement door tips are offered on how to replace a door panel in an existing door frame.

·       When trimming the door to size be careful that you do not cut too much material off. It is better to make two cuts than one that is too large.

·       If it is necessary to use a wood plane insure that it is sharp and set to a shallow depth. Avoid chipping out the corners of the door by working inwards from each edge towards the center.

·       When installing the hinges install only one screw in each hinge to begin with and test that the door closes easily in the frame. If it fits properly install the remaining screws.

·       Do not over tighten the screws or they will be loose in the hole causing a loose hinge.

·       When making the hinge mortises do not remove too much material.

·       Do not cut too much material off the bottom for clearing carpets or wood floors.

·       It is not abnormal to have to make small adjustments after installing the replacement door. Use sandpaper to make minor adjustments.

·       If the replacement door requires painting remove it from the door casing and remove the door hardware. Let the door dry thoroughly before reinstalling the hardware and reinstalling the door.

·       Add the door stops to prevent the door from bumping into walls. There are many different types of doorstops. Insure that the door stops do not pose a trip hazard or interfere with furniture placement.

Good luck installing your replacement door.
