Installing Skylights

Skylights - Sun Tunnels - Roof Windows

Introduction:

Whether building, remodeling or just looking to revitalize a special area in your home, skylights, sun tunnels, and roof windows offer a great value and the ability to completely wake-up a dark area in your home by flooding it with natural light.

No matter what your budget you can find a skylight that will work in your home. Bringing additional light in to a dark space will brighten the entire room. In addition, skylights will permit you to turn off those energy using electric lights which will save you money on energy cost. Once you have experienced the right light, energy savings and environmental benefits of skylights you will ask yourself why you haven’t considered skylights before.

There are numerous manufacturers of skylights but skylights, sun-tunnels and roof windows by Velux are the best buy for your money. I have three skylights and three large roof windows installed in my home, all made by Velux.

The skylights are installed in the roof of the sun porch. The roof is a hip roof off the main house with a skylight installed in each section. Even though the porch walls are nearly all glass the skylight brings in a great deal of additional light to brighten up the room.

The main part of the house is also of hip roof construction. The pitch angle is 40 degrees which provides a very large attic space. I finished the attic space into a very large room with three walk-in storage closets and a full bath. Because the roof is a hip roof there was really no way to install traditional windows so I installed three large roof windows.  The attic room has become one of the most favorite rooms in the house because of its brightness. And because the roof windows fully open there is plenty of cool air circulation during the summer months.

Installing skylights and roof windows is a relatively easy DIY task for most homeowners. They come with an installation kit that includes all the hardware and flashing for installation. If you do not have the skills and tools to install them yourself, Velux has an experienced team of factory certified installers that will be happy to install them for you at a very reasonable cost.

By installing skylights you can use the sun to lower your carbon footprint and brighten up your home. It is important to install the right size for the room to obtain the maximum benefit of natural light.  You will be amazed at how big a difference a skylight, sun tunnel, or roof window can make to almost any space.  You can regain your investment in terms of energy savings payback in as little as 3-5 years.
