Home Energy Savings Tips for Old House Doors
Old Hose Door Refurbishment
Introduction: Older style homes are usually
beautiful pieces of architecture that were built a
hundred or more years ago. The technology then is
not what it is today nor was the cost of heating as
expensive as it is today. In modern times
homeowners must take every step possible to
conserve energy in an effort to save money and to
do their part in helping the country become less
dependent on foreign oil. There are many different
techniques that can be employed to make older homes
more energy efficient. Below is some energy saving
tips and suggestions regarding home entry doors
that can be a primary source of cold air
infiltration. When dealing with older home
exterior doors there are several options to make
them more energy efficient. Any one or more of
these energy saving tip options will help you
reduce your heating cost. Option 1: If the door is a solid core
wooden old door with a large section of single pane
glass, cut a piece of Plexiglas one half inch
larger than the total width and height of the door
glass. Use clear silicon caulking to apply a thin
bead along the perimeter of the Plexiglas and set
in place on the wooden door over the glass area.
This will leave a void between the existing glass
and Plexiglas. Add a border molding to dress out
the door glass. Option 2: If there is no storm door or if
the existing storm door is in poor shape, install a
new storm door.
Option 3: Add additional weather seals
along the top and sides if air passes through when
the door is closed. Install weather stripping to
the base if air passes through when the door is
closed. Option 4: If the door has an old key
locking system air can blow right through the
keyhole. Replace the locking system with new and
either remove the old one or fill the existing
locking system with a caulking compound. Option 5: If the door is severely warped
replace the door with a new door that is insulated.
A fiberglass door is a good option. These DIY energy savings tips
for old home entry doors will go a long way in
reducing cold air infiltration and save you money
on your home heating cost. Related articles:
