Door Locks for Your Home

Home Security

Introduction:

Home security has become a big concern for homeowners in recent years. The most common home invaders today have become somewhat sophisticated and subtle when it comes to breaking into homes. It is quite common that they pick the lock on your door to gain a quiet entrance.

Lock picking is the home breaker art of defeating a lock by manipulating the components of the device without using a key. Although there are tools for picking locks a screw driver, hair-pin or even a credit card can be used to gain entry.

Most exterior doors come with an inexpensive common lockset. These common locks can be easily opened with a batter powered drill or a credit card. These locks are of poor quality and can be broken, popped loose or cut free without a lot of difficulty. But each of these methods requires time. With special lock picking tools the most difficult lock can be opened in a matter of minutes, or even seconds.

Consider multiple door locks for your doors. A combination of home deadbolts, rack bolts, sash locks and hinge bolts can effectively be used together on a sturdy door to make it nearly impossible to open without a key. Even if a burglar manages to pick one lock it is not likely he could pick all of them.

Deadbolts in particular can are a great security lock for your door. Most deadbolts are resistant to picking, impact failure and lock bumping. And deadbolts, like most built in locks, can be reinforced to the point where even a strong impact won't budge them.

For added security consider reinforcing your door and its frame in order to give it more strength as well as strength to the locks. If a burglar can simply kick your door in, then an expensive lock won't do much good. In addition, if a criminal can bash, pry or cut out your locks from the door it will simply swing open. Reinforce your doors and locks with metal plates and thick hinges that are double-screwed. It is also possible to attach an alarm sensor to the lock plate to sound the alarm if your door is tampered with.

Door locks are less to prevent a thief from getting in than they are to prevent them from getting in quickly. For the casual criminal good locks can act as a deterrent, but for a professional house-breaker they are unfortunately little more than an impediment. However, if you invest in the right home security system you can make your locked doors more trouble than is worth for the average thief.
