Woodworking Shop Tools
Power Saws, Hand Saws, and Sanders
In any good woodworking shop there
are several different kinds of woodworking equipment and tools to
include hand saws, power saws, and sanders to perform the most
rudimentary woodworking task.
Woodworking shop tools have their own
application although several can be used for different applications.
However, it is very important that you use the right one for the
right job. Choosing the right wood tool for whatever it is you want
to do can help prevent injuries and accidents. The following
woodworking shop tools are recommended for a basic woodworking shop:
Hand
Saws:
• Crosscut saw
• Rip saw
• Hack saw
• Bow saw
Powered
Circular Saw:
Circular saws
are used by both professional carpenters and the do-it-yourself
homeowners. The circular saws are great for a wide range of
applications in the shop and doing general carpenter work. They are
used cutting 2 x 4’s for framing a wall or ripping sheets of plywood
however, the right combination of saw and blade is important. In
selecting a circular saw look for one with a high rpm and a power
rating of 10 amps or better. Keep
in mind when selecting a blade that blades with more teeth make a
smoother cut. A saw blade with 24 teeth is ideal for rough cuts
associated with framing and sheathing. Saw blades with 50 or more
teeth are ideal for cutting finished plywood and lumber while blades
with 100 teeth are used for cutting laminate material.
Circular saw
blades can be interchanged quickly with one simple tool.
Most models actually store the wrench for changing the blade
on the saw itself making it self sufficient. Always unplug the saw
to prevent any false start-ups and injuries.
Jig Saw:
A
jigsaw is a must in the wood shop. It allows you to cut curved and
circular patterns in stock. For versatility, choose an
orbital-action, corded model that feels good in your hand and has an
easy blade changing system.
Table Saw:
The table saw is the heart and soul of every
woodworking shop, so you want to buy the best you can afford. It can
be used for many different applications when using the right kind of
jig. In general, table saws are either contractor table saw type
(portable) or cabinet type. Most are 10 inch table saws and use a 10
inch blade. They are used for ripping boards and plywood and can be
used for cutting angles, grooves, and making rabbits for close fit
joints. Table saw must be respected with proper safety techniques to
avoid injuries. A table saw fence must always be used when rip
cutting with a table saw.
Power Miter Saw:
The powered miter saw is a versatile saw that
is used to make most kinds of simple and compound angle cuts. It is
a must have for cutting crown molding.
Orbital Sander:
The most important tool every woodworking shop
should have is a random orbital sander. While palm sanders are less
expensive and can use plain sandpaper, the random orbital version
doesn't sand in patterns, but in a random motion. This will reduce
any sanding marks that may appear on the stock.
Belt Sander:
The belt sander is used to sand large flat
surfaces. Care must be taken when using the belt sander so it does
not make gouges in the wood. The standard belt sander has a 3 or 4
inch wide belt. The 4 inch wide belt is well worth the additional
expense.
With these basic
woodworking shop tools you can do a variety of projects from making
bird houses to building fine furniture. With a little practice with
these essential tools there isn’t very much that you cannot do,
although additional tools will be required as you gain experience.
