Waxing Wood Furniture

Introduction:

When it comes to finishing your wood furniture project the last step is to apply a high quality furniture wax. Waxing wood furniture is essential to bring out the beauty of the wood grain. There are many different types of furniture wax available on the market but few of them do the job better than a hard furniture paste wax. I have restored old furniture and done dozens of projects to include; accent tables, coffee tables, buffets and jewelry boxes.

All these project were finished with at least one coat of Minwax paste wax. It doesn’t make any difference what type of stain or paint you select for your project: paint stain, lacquer, any of the polyurethane varnishes, Tung oil, plain varnish, or shellac, the final finish should always be a durable furniture wax for the best results.

There are many other types of furniture wax that are easier to apply such as liquid wax, jelled wax, soft paste wax and beeswax. None of these products will bring out the luster and beauty of the wood as a hard paste wax such as Minwax. The other wax alternatives are easier to apply but like most things that are easy they will not give you the rich finish you want nor are they as durable and as a hard as past wax.

How to apply furniture wax:

1.   Let your final finish thoroughly dry for at least 24 hours.

2.   Use a wood cleaner to thoroughly clean the surface

3.  Apply a heavy coast of Minwax Paste Finishing Wax using a soft cotton cloth

4.   Let the wax dry for at least one hour

5.  Use a clean cotton cloth to clean the excess wax and polish the surface to a high luster

6.  For the best results repeat this process at least twice

Waxing wood furniture with a hard paste wax will protect it from stains for many years. Although it requires a little more work it is well worth the effort.
