Tools Set for the DIY Homeowners

Homeowner Tools Kit

Introduction:

Many homeowners perform many home improvement and repair tasks themselves in an effort to save money from having someone as well as the self satisfaction of knowing that you can do things for yourself. Most home improvement and home repair tasks are not difficult but they do require tools to do the job. For more complex tasks that are seldom performed, the tools can be rented for a short time rather than buying them. However, there are many tasks that need to be performed where a general homeowner tool kit is indispensable.

The question is just what tools does the DIY homeowner need available. Here are some suggestions for a general purpose tool kit for the DIY homeowner:

  • Saw (s): A hand saw is essential for cutting wood objects. It may be a powered skill saw or just a hand saw. For the skill saw you should have a coarse (rough cut) blade and a fine smooth cut blade. You should have several different types of hand saws such as:

    • Finish saw

    • Crosscut saw

    • Hacksaw (for cutting metal)

    • Bucksaw for cutting shrubs and tree limbs

  • Screwdrivers: There are many different types of screw drivers so it is best to have a standard screwdriver set that includes ten to twelve different types.

  • Measuring tape: Having more than one is better as different measuring tapes are used to measure different things.

  • Level (plumb): As a minimum your tool kit should include a tree foot level.

  • Carpenter square .

  • Hammers: A basic carpenter’s hammer will do. Having two of different sizes is better.

  • Wrenches: A combination set of open end and box end wrenches.

  • Socket set: A basic standard and metric set.

  • Pliers: Common, cutting, and adjustable.

  • Crowbar: A crowbar and / or claw bar.

  • Razor knife with extra blades.

  • Electric soldering kit.

  • Shovel, both a round pointed and square shovel.

  • Rakes.

  • Bush trimmers.

  • Garden hoe.

  • Garden spade.

This suggested list certainly is not all inclusive but it does represent the basic tools required for a DIY homeowner who enjoys doing home improvements and repairs around the house.
