Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips

Maintaining Your Lawn Mower

Introduction:

There is nothing as frustrating as to going out to mow the lawn and have the lawn mower not work. There are several things that you can do to insure that your lawn mower is ready to go when you are. Lawn mowers are a great tool and as all tools they must be maintained properly to do the job. Here are some lawn mower maintenance tips that will help you keep your lawnmower running.

  • If you have a gasoline lawn mower, refer to the operator’s manual to find out how to check and change the oil. Check the oil level every time you use the mower. Always add more when necessary and change it when it’s dirty. If a lawn mowers engine runs low of oil the engine will suffer irreparable damage. Avoid high lawn mower maintenance cost.

  • Store the lawn mower in a shed, garage, or in some kind of protective environment so that it isn’t exposed to the elements.

  • Check the lawn mower to see if it contains instructions for sharpening your mower blades. Some lawn mowers manufacturers encourage you to sharpen the blades often.

  • A lawn mower needs to have sharp blades to adequately cut grass. As a minimum, lawn mower blades should be sharpened twice a year or after the blade strikes a blunt objec

  • The best time to mow your lawn is after any dew from the night before has had time to dry. Late afternoon is usually better than the morning as the grass cuts better when it’s dry and less humid. Cutting wet grass can cause problems with the mower and generally just makes a bigger mess for you to deal with. This is especially true for a mulching lawn mower.

  • Mow the lawn in different directions each time you mow. This will help keep your lawn healthy and will reduce the likelihood of any patterns forming over multiple cuttings in the same direction.

  • Make sure you keep the fuel and oil that you pour into your mower is free of foreign objects. Use a funnel with a screen filter to service the gas tank.

  • Clean the grass off the underside of the mower after every mowing. Doing it occasionally is not enough if you want to protect it from corrosion.

  • Insure the mower is always off before you attempt to service the gas tank or clean the underside. Before going anywhere near the blades disconnect the spark plug wire first. This will avoid a nasty accident.

  • Clean the engine air intake after every use. Combustion engines need an unrestricted air intake to run efficiently. If the engine air intake on the mower is clogged with grass, the mower won’t run at peak efficiency and may not run at all.
