How to Repair Car Scratches
Repair Small Car Scratches Yourself
Introduction:
Getting small scratches on your car is just one of
the hazards that come with owning a car. Scratches
can be caused by a number of different reasons. You
may scratch a door with your keys or it gets
scratched in a parking lot. Don’t fret; these small
scratches are easy to repair. You don’t have to go
to a professional who will charge you a small
fortune to repair car scratches. Car scratch repair
is quite easy. You can do it yourself very
inexpensively.
Before attempting to repair a scratch determine if
your car has an enamel based primer or lacquer
based primer paint. The two different types of
paint do not mix well at all so be sure you have
the right type. You can determine this by
consulting your local auto parts store to help you
determine the exact color of your car. Take your
VIN number so that you can match the finish paint
with the car's primer coat. You may be able to find
the paint color code listed on the edge of the
doorframe or in the glove compartment. A dealership
would also be able to tell you the exact color
paint you'll need to repair the car scratch.
How to Repair Car Scratch:
1.
Buy primer paint labeled for automobile use in a
lighter color and body compound that will go on
easily in one coat.
2.
Wash the scuffed area with a laundry detergent to
remove any wax or grit.
3.
Use fine-grained sandpaper and sand along the
scratch, polishing away any rust you find. When
sanding the scratched area, you may find that it is
easier to buff out enamel finished paint with 1500
or 2000 grit sandpaper to prevent sanding marks.
4.
Blow or brush away any dust that accumulates and
then use masking tape and newspaper to isolate the
scratch. Leave half an inch of work space around
the scratch to work.
5.
Use a plastic putty knife to apply the body
compound to any deep scratches. Read the
instructions on the label and follow them closely.
6.
After the body compound hardens sand the spot flat
and blow away all the dust. Spray the primer onto
the scratch and let it dry overnight.
7.
After it is thoroughly dry use the brush from the
touchup paint to paint the area, and then let it
dry. That is all there is to it. If the scratches are too severe contact an auto body repair shop to make the repairs.
