How to Turn Off Your Water Supply

Introduction: Turning off your water house water supply is not something you do very often but it is important that you know where the shut off valve is and how to turn off your water supply.

Unfortunately there are situations whereby you need to turn off the water supply such as a frozen water pipe, a plumbing repair, or the addition of plumbing appliances. Everyone living in the house should know how to turn off the main water valve in the event of an emergency.

Where you turn off the water supply will depend on the type of water supply to your home. If you are on city or town water there is usually one valve that shuts off the water but if you have your own water supply source there may be more than one location to turn it off or there may be more than one water circuit in the house.

If there is only one main water supply valve as there generally is if you are on town or city water, it is relatively simple to shut off the water. To locate the shut off valve it is usually next to the water meter. To turn off the water simply close the valve. If it is stiff use a wrench or apply a little oil if necessary. After the valve is close you can bleed off the pressure by just opening any water tap.

If you have your own water supply from a well there is usually one main water supply shut off valve in the plumbing just before the storage tank. Turning the valve to the off position will shut off all water to the house. Open any spigot to bleed off the pressure.

In most homes there are several places to turn off the water to individual appliances or rooms. If you have a problem with a hot water pipe you can turn off the water supply to the hot water heater. Most bathrooms and kitchens have a cold water shut off supply valve and a hot water supply shut off valve in the supply lines that can be shut off independently of the other plumbing circuits.

Outdoor spigots usually have a shut off valve in the plumbing line just before it passes through the wall. The water supply to the outside spigot can be shut off by closing the valve.

Knowing how to turn off your water supply is critical should you have a major water leak. Everyone living in the house should know where the main water supply shut off valve (s) are and be able to turn them off in the event of an emergency.
