How to Install a Water Filter

Water Filtration System

Introduction:

Over the past two decades millions of homeowners have switched to bottled drinking water because of concerns over the purity or taste of their tap water. Poor quality water exists across the country, regardless of whether the water comes from municipal pipeline or ground well. However, there is a less expensive way to obtain clean drinking water.

You can simply install one of the water filtration systems available on the market. They are simple to install and will do a good job at filtering your drinking water.

The under sink water filtration system has two main components: A plastic filter housing that’s screwed inside of the sink cabinet and a compact gooseneck faucet that’s mounted on the sink or countertop for dispensing the clean filtered water. The filter housing contains two water filters.

The filter housing is mounted under the sink and connects to the gooseneck faucet with flexible plastic tubing. The filter housing is mounted inline in the existing cold water supply line with soldered copper tubing and fittings. Installing the filtration housing is a relatively easy DIY task for most homeowners.

The best model is dual cartridge filter system that has both carbon-block and granular-carbon filters that is attached to your main water supply line with a dedicated faucet and an electronic monitor that signals when it's time to replace the filters, usually after 500 gallons have passed through the filters which takes approximately six months.

Dual filters reduce most common chemicals and contaminants found in tap water either from a municipal source or ground well including lead, mercury, asbestos, pesticides, and cysts. They also eliminate sediment, bad taste and odors caused by the chlorine that is added to municipal water supplies.

Installing a water filtration system:

1.    Turn off the water supply

2.    Cut into the water-supply line

3.    Locate the cold-water shutoff valve under the sink. Take a piece of emery cloth and buff clean the copper tubing just directly below the valve.

4.    Remove a one inch long section of tubing and discard and then solder on a new shutoff valve.

5.    Fit the assembly onto the tee fitting coming off the cold-water supply with a 90-degree elbow. Solder both ends of the elbow in place.

6.    Drill a ½ inch hole in the sink for the new filter faucet

7.    Install the filter faucet into the hole and make sure it sits flat on top of the sink deck. Tighten the hex nut carefully to secure the faucet.

8.    Mount the filter underneath the sink.

9.    Attach the plastic tubing to the filter and the faucet underneath the sink.

10.Connect the filter's water-supply tubing

11.Open the filter faucet and let it run for about five minutes to remove air and particles from the cartridges.

That is all there is too it. There are many different water purification filters on the market and each one has its own installation requirement. These instructions are generic for installing a basic unit. Each filter will come with the manufacturers installation instructions. They should be followed closely to insure a proper installation.
