DIY Plumbing Repairs

Plumbing Repairs

Basic plumbing repairs are not difficult although some plumbing water issues can be complicated and difficult to repair if you don't have the knowledge or the correct tools. Many homeowners are comfortable performing DIY plumbing repairs which include fixing leaky faucets, tackling running toilets and repairing clogged shower heads.

All homeowners should be familiar with home plumbing system so in the event of an emergency they will no what to do. To understand the basics of plumbing repair a good place to start is by understanding how water is supplied to the home and how waste water leaves the home. In addition you should know where the emergency shut-off valve is located for your home and the shut off valves to the bathrooms and kitchen.

The Supply and Drainage System:

Before undertaking DIY plumbing repairs you should understand the home's water supply and drainage systems. Know the locations of hot and cold water pipes that snake through the home. Find the waste and drainage pipes that lead from fixtures to the septic tank or municipal system. Locate the water shut-off valves for the sinks, toilets and showers. Also locate the main water shut-off for the entire house.

Toilet Repairs:

When toilets don't have enough water in the tank or continue to run after they are flushed there are several troubleshooting steps necessary to remedy the problem. If the water runs continuously adjust the wires and the chain so the tank ball drops straight into the valve seat to shut off the water. When water spills into the overflow tube, the float arm needs to be bent slightly downward. Bend it upward if water doesn't stop after a flush. If the tank leaks, tighten the water line connections.

Sink Drips:

Stopping those annoying sink drips is not difficult. Most faucets are compression faucets that have a stem that allows water to flow or stop as the handle is turned. Washer less faucets rely solely on the movement of a handle to turn water on and off. Drips in both can be attributed to failed valves, O-rings, washers and other moving parts, which can be repaired with basic tools. Remove the failed parts with wrenches, screwdrivers and pliers, and replace with new supplies that can be purchased at any home improvement supply center.

Shower Heads:

Slow water flow in the shower heads is usually caused by minerals in the water that clog the holes in the shower head. To repair just unscrew the head and soak it in vinegar. If necessary use a toothpick to unblock clogged holes. For hand-held shower heads, check tubing for holes and breaks. Replace the entire unit rather than trying to repair it. The hoses are usually wound metal houses that cannot be repaired.
