Measurement Conversions

Introduction:

More and more we are confronted with changing measurements from metric to US standards in order to understand how much of an item we are buying. In the US we measure weight by the ounce, pound and ton, dry measure by the peck or bushel, liquid by the cup, quart or gallons and distance by the foot, yard or mile. Most of the rest of the world uses the metric system which is based on the meter, liter, gram and centigrade for temperature. Metric conversion to US standards can be quite mind boggling.

Converting these units from one system to the other is not always easy unless you carry around a hand conversion calculator or conversion table that will quickly convert one to the other quickly. Traveling and shopping in foreign countries, especially shopping for groceries, can be very frustrating. Listed below are some of the most common measurement conversions to help make foreign travel and shopping easier.    

Quick conversions:

1. Length conversions.

• 12 inches = 1 foot
• 1 meter = 1000 millimeters = 100 centimeters
• 1 yard = 3 feet = 36 inches
• 1 meter = 100 centimeters
• 1 mile = 1760 yards = 5280 feet = 63360 inches
• 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters
• 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters = 25.4 millimeters
•   millimeter = .03937 inches
• 1 foot = .3048 meters = 30.48 centimeters = 304.8 millimeters
• 1 centimeter = .3937 inches
• 1 yard = .9144 meters = 91.44 centimeters = 914.4 millimeters
• 1 meter = 1.093 yards = 3.281 feet = 39.37 inches
• 1 mile = 1.609 kilometers
• 1 kilometer = 0.6214 miles

2. Liquid conversions.

• 1 pint = 2 cups = .4732 liter

• 1 quart = 2 pints = 4 cups = .9463 liter

• 1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 3.785 liters

3. Weight conversions.

• I pound = 0.5 kilograms or a demi (1/2) kilo

• 1 ton = 907 kilograms

3. Temperature conversions.

• 0 degrees fahrenheit = -17.8 centigrade

• 32 degrees fahrenheit = 0.0 centigrade

• 70 degrees fahrenheit = 21.1centigrade
