How to Make Coffee the Old Fashion Way

Making Coffee Without a Coffee Pot

Introduction:

Have you ever wondered how they make coffee in the old day, the time before electricity, modern coffee makers and espresso machines? Yes, there really was a time before Mr. Coffee, Dunkin Doughnut and Starbucks when the population of the world enjoyed coffee. And the coffee was just as good too.

Coffee got its start in Ethiopia during the ninth century and became popular in the Arab world, eventually spreading to Europe in the seventh century. There were no electric coffee pots to brew the ground beans. It was boiled in a small pot, the pot later became known as a “coffee pot”.

In the colonial days of North America both coffee and tea were popular breakfast beverages. Tea was made in a tea pot whereby water was brought to a boil and tea was added and allowed to steep. Making coffee was a completely different process.

How to make coffee the old fashion way:

  • When I was much younger my parents made coffee in the traditional old fashion way. The following is the method that was used.
  • Place the desired cups of water in a sauce pan and place on a hot stove.
  • Add one tablespoon of your favorite coffee grounds to the pot when it becomes slightly warm.
  • Add a couple of egg shells to the mix and bring to a boil. The egg shells will absorb any bitterness in the coffee.
  • Remove from the heat and let stand for about five minutes. This will allow the coffee grounds to settle to the bottom of the pan.
  • Pour into your favorite coffee mug and enjoy the best cup of coffee you will ever have.

This method of making coffee was popular until the first stove top coffee peculator came into existence in the early eighteenth century. The stove top coffee percolator is still popular for campers for making coffee.
