Self Defense Awareness Tips

Overview:

Self defense training is essential for everyone and particularly for a woman’s, personal safety. Self defense training is not martial arts training. The practice of martial arts is a lifelong training regime of ancient philosophies, physical training, and learning self defense techniques. Self defense training for women is a brief course that includes a variety of martial art techniques to defend against an aggressor.

Self defense training, especially young women (girls) that are of high school and college age, is essential for personal safety.  Self defense classes or a self defense training course can provide training in many different techniques but self defense is more than just learning how to respond to an aggressor. Personal self defense also includes awareness of everything everywhere you go and no matter what you do. Listed below are some suggestions and self defense awareness tips that should become part of your everyday life routine.

Self Defense Tips:

It doesn’t matter where you go, there are risks for men and women in nearly every situation. At home, the grocery store parking lot, college campus, and even at work. It is important to know how to spot and avoid potentially dangerous scenarios.  The following tip will help you keep out of harmful situations:

  • Install good outdoor lighting at home.

  • Trim shrubs and bushes to prevent them from growing over windows.

  • Do not hide a key outside your home such as under the doormat or flower pot on the stoop.

  • Don’t answer the door until you know who is on the other side of it. Be aware that house breakers will often say anything to get you to open the door.

  • Ask for identification of “official visitors” such as policemen.

  • Before getting in your car inspect the inside and outside, especially the rear seat.

  • Keep sufficient gas in your gas tank to avoid running out.

  • Keep car windows up and doors locked when you are in and out of the car.

  • Avoid walking in unlighted areas alone.

  • Keep your eyes peeled for any suspicious activity.

  • Walk with an awareness of the area around you. Scan the area ahead and behind you.

  • Keep your jewelry and other valuables are out of sight.

Other Self Defense Techniques and Awareness:

  • Take a self defense course and continue to practice the techniques learned.

  • If you are a DIY learning person purchase books and DVDs to study self defense techniques.

  • If you walk a lot, carry self defense items such as; a whistle, pepper spray, or a stun gun. Keep these items so they are easy to get to for immediate use.
  • Remember that laws for carrying self defense weapons vary from state to state. Before you purchase self defense items check to see they can legally be carried where you live.

  • Don’t seek trouble. Avoid confrontational situations and hostile people.

  • If you frequent drinking establishments always be aware of your surroundings. Take note where the exits and windows are located. If possible, sit in an area where your back is to a wall.

If you follow these self defense awareness tips you will go far in providing for your own self defense. In addition to these tips I suggest that you take a self defense course that is at least eight weeks in duration so you will not only learn self defense techniques but also be able to practice them. Remember, self defense is all about awareness, overcoming fear, and implementing trained skills and techniques when confronted with a hostile person.
