Priming and Pre-finishing Wood Trim

Priming and Painting Trim before Installation Make the Job a Lot Easier

Introduction:

Installing wood trim either inside or outside is an easy and is one of those tasks that is often performed DIY by homeowners. It really doesn’t take a seasoned carpenter to install trim or a professional painter to apply the wood finish whether it is wood paint or wood stain. Like professionals, the homeowner can apply the primer paint and the finish coat of paint before installing the trim board. This makes the job easier and after the installation is complete all you have to do is touch it up with a paint brush.

Priming and pre-finishing wood trim prior to installation is a great time saver. Whether you are installing exterior trim or inside trim such as baseboard, door or window casing, crown molding, or chair rail, pre-finishing it will make the whole job a lot easier and save time.

Pre-finishing interior trim will also preclude the paint odor in the house. Painting wood trim can be done in the garage or the basement where you can control the environment for quicker drying and have more pleasant working conditions than standing on a ladder to do the task.

  • To prepare to apply the paint to the trim select an area that is large enough to accommodate the material. Trim boards usually come in 12 and 16 foot lengths so a lot of space is required.

  • Lay down paint drop cloths to prevent paint form staining the floor.

  • Set up work saw horses and lay out the trim boards to be painted.

  • Apply the primer paint and let thoroughly dry before apply the finish coat.

  • Apply two coats of finish paint. Let thoroughly dry between applications.

  • Now you are ready to cut and install the trim.

  • After installing the trim go back and touch up the nail holes.

Priming and pre-finishing wood trim before installation will not only give you a professional looking paint job it will save you time too.
