Painting Safety Tips

Home Painting

Home painting is a relatively safe DIY home improvement activity if the proper safety precautions are taken. As in most things, safety cannot be express enough to avoid personal injury.

Painting is one of the easiest do-it-yourself projects but it is not without its potential hazards. The proper respect for the task itself along with common sense and a few good safety guidelines will ensure that your project is completed without mishaps.

Painting safety tips:

1.    Always ventilate the area that is being painted. Open all doors and windows and us fans to keep the area ventilated. Do not let a freshly painted room be occupied, especially by children, or pets.

2.    Wear a respirator if the area being painted cannot be adequately ventilated, and work for short periods only.

3.    Wear a dust mask and safety goggles when sanding.

4.    If you are using chemical solutions such as stripper or cleaners, wear safety goggles, gloves, and a respirator.

5.    Use drop cloths to protect floors and shrubs. Avoid using plastic because it can be slippery when wet.

6.    Do not paint or store paint near a heat source such as a water heater or fireplace. Never smoke while painting.

7.    Insure that the ladder is in good condition. Set the legs on a level surface and lock the cross braces. Do not stand on the top of the ladder or on the utility shelf. If you are having difficulty reaching a spot, move the ladder rather than leaning out.

8.    Clean up carefully and thoroughly at the end of the day. If rags have alkyd paint or thinner on them leave them to dry outside to avoid any chance of spontaneous combustion. Choose an area inaccessible to children and pets to store them. When they are thoroughly dry, take them to a toxic-waste dump site for disposal.

9.    If you are using an extension ladder be watchful of overhead obstruction such as power lines. A metal ladder touching a power line can cause it to shot out causing severe injury or death to persons handling the ladder.

10.Don’t let small children climb on ladders or scaffolding.

Painting is an easy DIY task but it isn’t without its hazards. Follow these home painting tips and you may avoid injury or accidents.
