How to Hire a Handyman

Insure You Hire a Qualified Handyman Contractor

Introduction:

Often homeowners, particularly the elderly, resort to hiring a local handyman to do odd home improvements around the house for such tasks as painting, as raking leaves or plating new shrubs. A handyman, or woman, is not necessarily a skilled craftsman but can perform a variety of tasks to assist the homeowner. The problem is hiring these workers is being sure that th

ey can perform the task. Hiring a handyman is no different than hiring a contractor; you want to be sure that you are getting what you pay for.

As questions that will help you determine whether or not you have found a quality handyman for your home improvement tasks. Before you sign a contract, make sure you ask these questions and get a satisfied answer.

1.    Always get an estimate:

Some handymen charge by the job while others charge by the hour. If the one you are considering charges by the hour getting an estimate is going to be difficult. . Ask if you can have an estimate beforehand. A handyman who is experienced and confident in his work will be able to provide an accurate estimate, within 10%, which help you budget for the job.

2.  What are the terms and form of payment:

Never pay the full amount up front. A professional handyman usually accepts payment in installments. Some also require a deposit up front that is used to buy supplies to get the job started. If he allows you to pay when the project is fully complete you know that you don’t have much concern on getting the job done.

3.  Will the handyman need the assistance of a subcontractor:

Some home improvement tasks like plumbing and electric work require the services of a licensed professional. If your handyman does not carry the necessary licenses for these types of tasks he will need to subcontract some of the work out to someone who does. Insure you know what subcontractors will be required and how they will be paid before the job begins.

It a formal written contract is required know what is in it:

Always ask about a written contract before hiring a contractor. Only choose a contractor who is willing to provide you with a written contract. Know and understand what is in that contract. Insure it includes the price and the work to be done. This will protect you from an unscrupulous contractor who does not perform the work to the contract requirements.

Request references:

A quality handyman and contractors will have a list of verifiable references you can call to check on his workmanship. If your contractor cannot or will not provide references find someone else. Call one or two of the references or visit the job site to check the quality of work.

These questions are simple but they will give you the insight into the work that a handyman will perform. This is how to hire a handyman that you are certain will do the job to your satisfaction.
