Garden Fence Post and Fencing Material

Building a Vegetable Garden Fence

Introduction:

The down side of having a backyard vegetable garden is that the animals like your vegetables just as much as you do. If you do not have a fence around your vegetable garden the deer will certainly discover it and reduce it to nearly nothing in just one overnight. Although there are many sprays and powders that are recommended to keep the deer away none of them work very well.

The only effective way to keep the deer from destroying your vegetable garden is to install a fence. The central question is what kind of a vegetable garden fence post and fencing material to install.

Whatever the fence material you choose, the fence post should be either concrete, metal or pressure treated wood. Concrete fence post will last for decades but they are difficult to find to purchase and are not that easy to build as a DIY project. In addition, attaching fencing material to a cement garden post is problematic. Rails or split-rails are ideal to use with cement fence posts.

Metal fence posts work well but you are limited to using wire as fencing material. Wire fencing does not make an attractive garden fence unless you plan on planting shrubs or vines around it to hide the fence.

Pressure treated wood fence posts and material is an excellent option as it will last for about thirty years or longer before it needs replacement. In addition, it is much easier to attach fencing material to a wooden fence post that concrete or metal post. Lattice panels are easily attached to wood fence posts and they may be left natural or stained. Lattice pressure treated panels or plastic panels come in 4 x 8 foot sections and can be nailed or screwed to the fence post.

Given the limited choices for fence posts, the pressure treated fence post for your garden is the easiest to install but does require maintaining. All garden fence posts and fencing materials are somewhat costly. The least expensive way to build a garden fence is to make your own cement post and use pressure treated rail material. Making the post is a great DIY winter project. Once the post and fence are installed it will last for decades and requires little to no maintenance.

These are the tree options for installing vegetable garden fence post and fencing material. If you are going to have a successful vegetable garden you will need some kind of a fence to protect it from destruction by animals.
