Teak Wood Outdoor Furniture

Overview:

One of the most popular outdoor furniture is teak wood furniture. Teak wood is a beautiful hardwood grown in several parts of the tropical world such as Malaysia, India, Thailand, Indonesia, and South America. Teak wood outdoor furniture is used for patio furniture and many other outdoor applications because of its durability. But, teak wood outdoor furniture has its drawbacks too.

Teak is water resistant and nearly impervious to insects. It is one of the few hardwood types that contain natural oil that makes teak nearly perfect for outdoor furniture. The oil that is contained in teak is what makes it insect repellent. The natural oil protects the teak tree from decay, bacteria, and insects. As far as outside wooden furniture goes it is a good choice.

If you do not have a large house to entertain large numbers of quests on special occasions an alternate place is outside on your patio or in the garden (lawn). You may not actually consider your outdoor spaces as a garden, but for as long as there is a display and cultivated plants, flowers,  and other forms of nature, the outdoor space is considered as gardens.

Furnishing outdoor spaces with the right furniture can be a challenge. Aside from the fact that the outdoor space can be consider as an extension of your home, the types of furniture you want to place in it has to be determined . There is a wide range of outdoor furniture to choose from. In fact, the choices are so numerous that choosing is a little difficult. In addition to outdoor wooden furniture there is plastic and metal outdoor furniture to choose from. Plastic and wooden furniture works well for patio dining furniture too.

As a practical solution, teak wood furniture may not be your best choice.  Although teak wood furniture may complement the natural environment that most outdoor space offers it does not hold its appearance after a season outside in the weather. Yes, it does look great in the store show room and for the first few weeks that it is exposed to the elements of nature. Unfortunately it darkens over time and even becomes black streaked after just one season of exposure. In addition, most teak wood furniture is assembled with wooden pegs and glue. The joints become loose as the wood expands and contracts. The glue used is not always good quality water resistant glue. After just one season most teak furniture will require repairs.

To keep teak's original color it requires an annual brushing with teak oil to maintain the original color. If the oil is not applied annually the wood turns a silvery gray with black streaks in the wood grain. Although teak wood furniture looks great when new the appearance diminishes to a near eye sore after a year.

The best outdoor furniture is metal furniture made from aluminum with cast aluminum outdoor furniture being the best for durability in all climate conditions. It will not rust and requires nearly no annual maintenance. It looks great year around. I recommend cast aluminum outdoor furniture with removable cushions that can be stored inside during stormy weather.
