Lawn and Garden Equipment

Farther and Mother Day Gifts

If you are a DIY backyard gardener, you are going to need some basic lawn garden tools in addition to a lawn mower. Just having a few bulbs, plants and seeds isn’t all there is to gardening. There are several lawn and garden tools that are necessary for real green thumb gardeners. They make great father and mother day gifts too. There are many different lawn garden items that will come to your aid countless times as you begin your planting and sowing your garden and maintain your lawn.

Your choice of garden tools and accessories can a difficult task because there are so many different products to choose from. The question is which ones you will need and which ones you don’t need. As an experience and long practiced gardener I have a few suggestions for what you need for basic gardening and tools and equipment.

  1. Having the right shovel is important to gardening. If you are going to be digging, you should purchase a shovel that is shaped like a spade. If you are going to be picking up clutter and debris from your soil, you will want to have a flat shovel. When purchasing a shovel, keep in mind the length of the handle. The longer the handle, the easier it will be to lift when it is full of dirt.
  2. A rake is an absolute must. The best rakes are made of metal. They last longer and they make raking much easier because the tines will not bend. Plastic rakes are okay for raking leaves but they are almost useless for anything else.

  3. Cutting shears or pruning shears.  Pruning shears are necessary for cutting small limbs and for trimming shrubs and bushes. You do not have to spend a fortune on shears, either. Just do not buy the cheapest pair that you find. You want them to last a few years. And remember, shears can be sharpened when they become dull.

  4. Hedge shears are a must for trimming shrubs. You can purchase hand shears or electric shears. However, if you have a lot of shrubs, you may want to use electric shears.

  5. Garden hose: Many gardeners make a major mistake when they buy a garden hose. They buy one that is too short or too small in diameter. A 5/8th diameter hose is an excellent choice. Make sure the garden hose you purchase will reach everything you need to water. A reel for your hose is a great accessory to keep your house neat and reduce the frustration of a tangled hose.

  6. Every gardener needs a wheelbarrow. You can use a wheelbarrow for many different things around your house. You can move dirt in it, haul wood, plants, or bags of fertilizer. And sometime it can be a great toy for children to ride in.

  7. A tank sprayer is a must. Tank sprayers can be used to apply fertilizer to your lawn and garden and they can also be used to kill weeds and those pests that enjoy your vegetables as much as you do. Sprayers can be purchased in many different sizes from a small one gallon tank to a larger sprayer that is on wheels.

  8. A rototiller is almost a must unless you are happy with renting one every spring and fall to churn up your garden. Rototillers can be purchased from a garden supply center at very reasonable prices.

These are the basic lawn and garden equipment items you need to be a successful gardener. All these item can be purchased from your local garden center or on line. Happy gardening!
