Building a Compost Bin with Old Wood Pallets
Inexpensive Compost Bin
|
Backyard gardeners always
have plant debris that is removed from the garden.
This waste can be recycled into useful compost
rather than letting it go to waste or hauling it
away. You can quite easily build a compost bin from
used materials to store the plant waste while it
breaks down into useful compost. Compost consists
of decomposed plant matter and is excellent as a
soil supplement and fertilizer.
You can build an inexpensive compost bin from
recycled wood pallets very inexpensively. Before
you begin construction, decide how large you would
like the bin to be. The average garden and lawn
produce enough compostable material to fill a 48
cubic foot bin. That is a bin that measures four
feet on each side and is three feet deep. Used
pallets are ideal to make a compost bin. Used
pallets can be obtained at most recycling centers
or warehouses free of charge.
Material Required Building a Wood Pallet Compost
Bin
·
Six used wood pallets that are approximately for
feet long and three feet high. Use one for the
bottom, one for the top and the other four for the
sides.
·
Hammer and nails or screws
·
Two latches for one side
·
Mesh or chicken wire to attach to the sides
·
Rope to latch the top in place
Building
the Compost Bin
Secure the Pallets Together as follows:
·
Nail or screw four pallets together to create the
four walls of the compost bin. Place the four
pallets on top of the bottom pallet and nail or
screw in place.
·
Create a door to access the compost on one side of
the bin. Do this by cutting a small square from the
bottom of one of the side walls and latch a board
over the hole.
·
Line the inside of the compost bin with wire mesh
or chicken wire to protect your compost from
animals that may attempt to get to it.
·
Create the top with the sixth wood pallet. The top
should cover the compost bin completely to best
protect the compost inside. You may either latch
the top of the bin onto one of the standing walls
or secure it to the top of the bin using rope. Make
sure that the top of the bin is firmly attached to
the side walls to protect your compost against
hungry animals.
Locate the compost bin near your garden area and
your all set to start composting.
Building a compost bin with old wood pallets is inexpensive and easy to build. Most of the vines and other material from your garden can be recycled into rich compost. The compost will help provide compost material that is rich in nutrients for your vegetable and flower gardens.
