Building a Backyard GreenhouseBackyard Greenhouses
Introduction: When summer is over and the vegetable garden winds down at summer's end you can stretch out the growing of many veggies and flowers into the winter months with a small greenhouse. Having your own fresh grown veggies during the winter is much better than store bought veggies that are artificially ripened. Building a backyard green house is not a complicated or difficult task especially if you elect to purchase a greenhouse kit rather than build one from scratch. In most cases a kit will actually cost less than building one from scratch. Purchasing a green house kit is a great idea but before committing to the project consider the following questions:
You'll need a spot that's as level as possible and relatively close to the house for a water supply, electrical and gas. The ideal site must also drain well and be sheltered from the wind with a south facing exposure that gets at least six hours of sun during the winter days. How large a greenhouse do you need. Size depends on your budget and gardening objectives. Choose a size that will allow you to expand your greenhouse activities in the future. In the long run it's more practical and economical to build one a bit bigger than what you currently need. Access to the greenhouse. The greenhouse should not be too far in the backyard as you will have to gain daily access to it from your home. If it is too far you will be confronted with shoveling an access route through the snow. What am I going to grow in the greenhouse. You are almost unlimited as to what you want to grow in the greenhouse. It is quite common to grow most kinds of vegetables such as tomatoes, radishes, beets, and lettuce. Building a backyard green house is a great idea if you want to extend your growing season into the winter months. Greenhouse kits are reasonably priced and easy to assemble by most DIY homeowners.
