Installing a Window Air Conditioner
You will
want to install a window air conditioner before the weather gets to
uncomfortable. Air conditioner window units for personal use are
very popular because they consume less energy than other models.
Typically small window air conditioners are rated between 6,000 and
8,000 BTUs and operate on a 120 volt electric circuit. These types of
small air conditioners are the best option for cooling a small area
room in an apartment or small house such as a living room or
bedroom. You can install window air conditioning window units in the
rooms for different individuals, so you can adjust the temperature
according to preferences. Many people believe that the installation
of an air conditioner requires a high level of expertise, but it is
actually very easy to install an air conditioner as a DIY project.
Use caution as
window air conditioners are heavy, so you need to make sure that you
lift them properly without putting too much pressure on any part of
the body, which may injure you. Consider the size of the window
before buying a new air conditioner. The right size air conditioner
should fill the window opening as much as possible without using a
lot of space fillers. The better the units fits the window opening
the more efficient it will be at cooling the room.

Installing the Air Conditioner:
-
First,
decide which window you will use for installing the air
conditioning. You should choose a window with an electrical
outlet nearby, so the air conditioner can be connected easily.
Make sure there is no furniture near the window which would
block air flow.
-
Check the
window sill to ensure that it will be stable enough to support
the air conditioning.
-
Install the
metal support brackets that come with the air-conditioning at an
appropriate location to support the weight of the unit as
indicated in the installation instructions. The mounting
brackets are attached to the unit and screwed in place below the
window frame.
-
Slide the
air conditioning unit on to the support brackets and check with
the level to insure that the unit is sitting level. Adjust the
brackets as necessary to level the unit.
-
Lower the
window to the point where the window contacts the air
conditioner. Raise the window again and attach a strip of foam
weather stripping where the window contacts the air conditioner.
Slide the side extensions to close the gaps between the window
frame and the sides of the unit. If necessary, attach the
extensions on the side wall using wood screws.
-
Apply
additional blocking as necessary between the window frame and
the air conditioner to close any openings. This will ensure that
no cold air escaping from the sides or the bottom of the unit.
That’s all there is to it.
