How to Insulate a Basement Concrete Slab Floor

Insulating a Basement Floor

Introduction:

If your basement is exceptionally cold you can cure the problem by insulating the floor. Insulating a basement floor can save you money on your heating cost. In addition to the energy savings, installing a plywood subfloor and insulation can provide for the finishing with carpeting or hardwood flooring. This will give a warm and comfortable basement for the entire family to enjoy.

To prepare for installing the subfloor and insulating of the concrete slab floor insure that the floor is level and is in good condition so that the subfloor components will lie flat on the surface. Measure the distance between the slab and the ceiling to determine the overall height. There must be approximately 90 inches of clearance between the ceiling and the surface of the finished floor to comply with most building codes. The subfloor will take up approximately 2 inches before any finished floor covering is installed. Check with your local code officer for requirements in your area.

Install the subfloor:

·       Clean the slab surface thoroughly then apply a coating of water based floor sealer and let dry. This will reduce moisture penetration.

·       Lay out pressure-treated 2 by 4s around the edge of the room and fasten them to the slab with liquid nail cement and 2 ¼ inch masonry nails. Lay out additional 2 by 4s 16 inches on center and fasten with liquid nail cement and 1¼ inch masonry nails.

·       Check that the 2 by 4s are level and shim where needed to ensure a level surface.

·       Place1½ inch rigid foam insulation between the 2 by 4s.

·       Place ¾ inch plywood sheathing across the 2 by 4s. Alternate the rows with half sheets to stagger the joints. Attach the sheathing with 6d nails or screws every 6 inches.

Once the plywood is installed install the flooring material of your choice. That is how to insulate a basement slab floor. Insulting the basement floor will provide a comfortable warm living space.
