Sunrooms, Solariums, Greenhouses, and Conservatories

A Great Home Addition

Introduction:

Are you thinking of a home addition? Adding a sunroom, solarium, greenhouse, or conservatory will give your home a great addition that you will enjoy for years as well as provide a calm place to relax and bring some of the outdoors inside your home.

These mostly glass and glass rooms are built with standard building materials to match and coordinate with you house design and will provide much more space, a place to relax, and a place to escape the heat or cold of the outdoors. You can enjoy the natural sunlight nearly every day of the year.

Depending on what you intend to use the room for you have a choice between a sunroom, solarium, greenhouse, or a conservatory to suit your needs. Either one will make a great home addition and add value to your home. These glass additions are usually formed by covering a patio or by building a self-standing building that is a mostly glass structure. They are usually vented with many windows that open to the outside air or connect with your homes central heating and air conditioning system, depending on the application and its use.

Solariums are often referred to as sunrooms and are built onto the home like a patio. They are typically furnished with comfortable furniture and have heat and air conditioning. Solariums allow some natural sunlight to emanate throughout the room without letting in the heat of summer or cold of winter. During snow storms you can sit comfortably inside the temperature controlled sunroom and watch the snow fall.

A greenhouse typically is a separate building from your home however; sometimes it is attached to the home. Greenhouses are for nurturing plants and seedlings in a sunlight climate-controlled area until they become strong enough to be re-plated outside in a garden. Greenhouses usually incorporate a watering system and a large work space for potting. They are usually vented with fans to improve air circulation.

Conservatories fulfill the uses of both a solarium and a greenhouse. They typically are attached to the house but sometimes are a free-standing building. Conservatories may have a variety of different types of plants growing in them like an indoor garden. They also incorporate a watering system and a drainage system that provides water for the plants and allow the drainage of excess water. They provide a relaxing place for those who want to spend time in their indoor garden without going outside.

You have a choice of purchasing a prefabricated building kit or construct the addition from scratch. There are several manufactures, designs, and different types of building material for these additions. Building these additions is a great DIY home improvement project for the DIY homeowner. The prefabricated kits come with detailed instructions and are quite easy to assemble. Most of them can be assembled in a couple of weekends. Whatever your choice, you are sure to enjoy the sun and outdoors with the addition of a sunroom, solarium, greenhouse, or conservatory to your home.
