Sunroom Heating and Air-Conditioning
Sunroom Heating
Introduction: Some home
improvement projects make great home improvements
that increase the value of your home and provide
you with comfort and enjoyment. If you have a
sunroom in your home or if you are planning to
install a sunroom, you should consider how you will
heat and cool it during the cold and hot weather
months. By installing a heating and
air-conditioning system you will be able to enjoy
the additional space throughout the year.
There are several options for installing a heating
and air-conditioning system in your sunroom. If the
room is attached to your home and you have a
central heating and air-conditioning system, it’s
easy to tap it directly into the existing system.
This can be simply done by extending the ducting
from the house into the sunroom. This will permit
the sunroom temperature to be regulated by the
central system.
Depending on the system design of your central
system you may be able to install a separate
thermostat to regulate the sunroom temperature from
the main house. If you can’t install a separate
thermostat you can still regulate the temperature
by controlling the air outlet registers in the
sunroom. This will allow warm or cool air to enter
the sunroom at a different rate from the rest of
the house.
You will need to ensure the system is powerful
enough to accommodate the extra volume of the
sunroom and you will need to add additional duct
fans to help the air flow into the room
efficiently.
If you want to have more direct control in the
sunroom, or if the room is detached from the house,
you can add an independent heating system and
air-conditioning units. For heating you can add
electric baseboard or a radiant heating system. For
cooling the sunroom you can use window or wall
mounted air-conditioning units. Adding ceiling fans
will help circulate the air and make the system
work more efficiently. If you are not sure which method will be the best consult with a heating and cooling contractor to help you decide the most efficient and cost effective way to heat and cool your sunroom. If your sunroom is only a three season room you may not need a full blown heating and air-conditioning system. A space heater may be adequate for cool nights and a window or wall mounted air-conditioner may work well enough during hot weather. Whatever method you choose, adding heat and air-conditioning will allow you to enjoy your sunroom all year.
