Steel Storage Shelving

Steel Make Strong Storage Shelves

Overview:

If you’re considering new shelving for your garage, basement or closets, you should consider the benefits of steel storage shelving. Steel shelving is much better than wood shelving in most applications. Although steel shelving isn’t often used in the home it’s one of the most durable, versatile and affordable materials available, and it’s also very easy to find and install.

Although heavy duty shelving is used for industrial application light duty steel shelving is often used in homes. Here are some things to consider before you make a purchase of metal shelving.

When you first start looking at the various types of steel storage shelving for your home, you may become confused as to which type of material will suit your purposes the best. One of the most important factors will be where you plan on using it.

Damp or moist environments such as basements are not the best place for much of anything made of steel. It has a tendency to rust and degrade in a short time. For this environment aluminum shelving is the best option. In warm, high humidity environments galvanized steel will work well.

Galvanized steel has a layer of zinc which prevents corrosion and makes the steel waterproof. In all other areas of the home, steel shelving will work very well. Steel for garage shelving is particularly a good choice over wood shelving as it is easier to install and does not require painting.

If space is an issue, consider vertical steel shelving units. Vertical units are often the perfect solution for small garages or narrow basements that have limited horizontal shelving space. If vertical shelving is already installed you can add shelving on top of what is already in place. If the current shelving is too old or is showing signs of wear, then you may want to consider new shelving.

Steel shelving is one of the most versatile types of shelving you can find for just about any storage need. It is certainly better than wood shelving in most cases. You will want to consider the type of environment where it will be used, as well as whether you can add on to the existing shelving. You may also want to think about the type of material you will be storing.  Heavy boxes work well with metal shelving. Steel shelving is available at most home improvement supply centers and it can be purchased on line. Often used steel shelving is available for very reasonable prices.
