Sealing Tape for Doors and
Windows
How to Insulate Windows and Doors with Sealing Tape
Introduction: Winter is on the way again an along with it the cold wind that seems to penetrate every door and window in your home. You can remedy this problem by installing door and window sealing tape around any replacement exterior windows and doors to prevent air infiltration. A good quality weather sealing tape creates a permanent sealing around windows and doors to keep out air drafts, water and vapor from entering your home around doors and windows.
Installing door and window sealing tape will go a
long way in helping to keep homes warmer and
prevent black mold by stopping moisture from
entering the home.
Ideally door and window sealing tape should be
installed during the installation process.
Unfortunately many home builders omit this step
leaving the home owner to resolve cold air
infiltration around doors and windows or pay the
high cost of wasting energy cost to heat the home.
It’s an easy DIY project to installing door and
window sealing tape when you are installing a
replacement door or window. Simply cut a piece to
length and peel the back paper off while rolling
the sealing tape into place against the wall
sheathing before installing the door or window. For
windows the tape should overlap the nailing flange.
The process is similar for doors. All four sides of
each door and window should be taped.
The best
door and window sealing tape on the market is the
Butyl Hybrid formula. It is a new BT25XL door and
window sealing tape that provides maximum adhesion
even in extreme temperatures. It also has increased
adhesion on difficult to adhere sheathing such as
OSB. The tape forms a permanent seal around doors
and windows that prevents air and moisture leaks.
Moisture intrusion that causes black mold is
eliminated. The tape can be installed and left
exposed for 120 days without any UV degradation.
It is also the only flashing tape that has
passed a hurricane level windblown rain test.
The BT25XL door and window sealer should not be
used in conjunction with solvent based caulk or
with flexible PVC based membrane material. In
addition, the door and window sealing tape should
be tested with the wall sheathing for adhesion. If
there is inadequate adhesion, the wall sheathing
surface can be primed with a spray adhesive before
applying the sealing tape. |
