Laundry Room Storage:

More Store Space for the Laundry Room

Introduction:

Doing laundry is just one of those chores that is never really done. There is always another wash load to do. It nearly takes a chemist to figure out what laundry detergent to use with the different types of fabrics. This makes laundry room storage an issue, “where do you put everything?" There just never seems to be enough room in the laundry room.

Here are some laundry rooms and laundry room storage ideas to help you breeze through your laundry in no time at all and have well organized laundry room.

Locating your washer and dryer:

  • Put your laundry room or laundry area near the bedrooms where you generate the most laundry to minimize the steps to take it to the laundry room and eliminate clothes clutter. A good place for a laundry station is inside a bathroom or hall closet. If that isn’t possible locate the laundry room next to the kitchen. Many homes have a walk through laundry room located between the kitchen and garage. They work well as a laundry room and “mud room” for removing shoes and shoe storage before entering the house.

  • This will require a 220 volt electrical outlet for the dryer and hot and cold water plumbing in addition to a drain pipe for the washer.

  • All dryers require a vent to the outside to exhaust heat, and gas dryers require a gas line. Personally I prefer an electric dryer over a gas dryer.

  • Consider a stackable washer and dryer to conserve space.

Add laundry room cabinets for storage:

  • Home centers offer stock kitchen cabinetry that you can

  • Install above and or beside the washer and dryer. They don’t need to be expensive cabinets but they should be large enough to hold your laundry detergents and supplies.

  • Use freestanding laundry room storage cabinets to keep clutter out of sight. Position a freestanding cabinet between or beside the washer and dryer.

  • It is easy to equip a stock or freestanding cabinet with a fold-down ironing board and a holder for the iron.

Provide laundry room storage bins, baskets, and open shelving:

  • Plastic or solid metal bins keep small items corralled and out of sight inside a cabinet or on open shelves. Wire baskets make it easy to inventory supplies while keeping similar things together.

  • Baskets provide for folded linens or other items you store inside.

  • Locate a hamper in each bathroom to collect dirty laundry. Only use hampers that are ventilated.

  • Open laundry room shelving made from Melamine or wire shelves work well above or beside the washer and dryer to provide for quick access to laundry supplies.

Create space for hanging clothes:

  • Include a hanging rod to hang clothing fresh from the dryer or to drip dry. This can be done by stretching a hanging rod between two tall cabinets flanking the washer and dryer.

  • Provide storage space for shoes and install a deep laundry sink.
