Installing Ridge Venting
Attic Ridge Venting
Introduction: The attic in every home needs adequate attic venting to prevent damage to the roof structure and air to circulate in the house. There are several ways to vent your attic. Usually there is a combination of different vent systems to adequately vent the attic. When installing ridge venting a special type of material is used to run lengthwise across both sides of the ridge on slanted roofs to permit air to ventilate out from attics or crawlspaces above the living space. Ridge vents are constructed to keep pollution and bad weather out while your home remains properly ventilated. Ridge vents function so air circulates in your home. When windows and doors are closed the air trapped inside has to go somewhere. As heat rises it flows upward to your attic or crawlspace. If there is nowhere for the air to ventilate out it becomes trapped in that attic space and can cause it to turn into a sauna.
Poor attic ventilation
also can cause moisture build-up under your roof,
which in turn can damage the roof structure.
Shingles might not get damaged but as a result of
the moisture build up you will need a replacement
roof before you realize it.
In addition, the house will be much warmer during
summer weather causing you to crank up the air
conditioning which will drive up your utility cost.
By adding ridge vents a lot of this added heat will
be precluded from happening.
How to install ridge venting:
When your house is under construction or when
you're ready to have a new roof installed be sure
to include adding ridge vents. A reputable roofer
will know exactly what is required to ensure that
your attic is properly vented and the roof remains
in good condition for years to come.
There are several ways to install ridge venting.
Essentially there is a two to three inch gap in the
roof sheathing along the ridge of the roof. This
space is covered with a porous ridge vent material
which allows the attic air to escape. The porous
ridge vent is then covered with an aluminum cap to
prevent water from entering. Don’t underestimate the importance of ridge venting. When used in combination with soffit vents, gable vents and attic fans your attic will be properly vented during the summer and winter. Related articles:
