How to Build a Pole Barn

Pole Barn Structure Construction Materials

Introduction:

Way back in antiquity the construction of farmer barns was by the post and beam construction method. In later years the post and beam constructed barns gave way to a new technique for building inexpensive barns called pole barns. Pole barn structures are built to last for decades and are much cheaper to build than post and beam structures. If you are unfamiliar with building a pole barn or any other pole barn type structure you should begin with your local building inspector to determine if you need a permit and any other restrictions that may apply in your area.

Present a detailed plan to the inspector and let him know you planPole barn to use the structure as a garage, storage or for agricultural purposes. Pole barns and pole barn garages and other pole constructed structures usually have fewer building regulations and restrictions.

Materials required for building a pole barn structure:

·       Poles made of pressure treated lumber or utility poles

·       Lumber for framing the walls between the poles, 2 X 4s, sheathing or metal

·       Prefabricated trusses for the roof

·       Roofing material, either metal or plywood roofing

·       Gravel and concrete to anchor the poles in the ground

·       Regular straight and screw-in roofing nails

·       Doors, either sliding or overhead roll up

Tools required:

·       Digging equipment such as a tractor-powered auger or post-hole digger

·       Hammers

·       Drill with attachment for roofing screws

·       Carpenter's level and a string level and line

·       Saws; miter saw, circular saw and a bevel square set

·       Ladders

·       Optional tools: A backhoe for ground leveling and back filling

If you want a pole barn structure but don't want the hassle of buying all the materials and tools or dealing with the details of construction, you can pay someone to build it for you or you can purchase a pole barn kit. The kits are easy to assemble and are usually cheaper than the material cost for a stick built structure. Costs vary from approximately $6000 for a smaller pole structure to $15,000 for a larger structure.

No matter what method you choose there is a myriad of options when it comes to building a pole barn structure. Most building supply centers have material on hand or they can supply you with a DIY kit. The cost of building a pole barn structure is much cheaper than building a conventional structure.
