Front Porch Design

Porch Design and Furnishings

Introduction:

When considering a front porch design you should create a style that has curbside appeal as well as comfort, after all, the porch serves as welcome center to your home and is an extension of the homes living space.

The kitchen may be the heart and soul of the home but the front porch is like a welcoming card or handshake, welcoming visitors and also serving as a connection point with the neighborhood. It also serves as an impression for passers-by and the neighbors.

The front porch design and style gives visitors a preview of what's inside the home. It really serves as a welcoming mat for your home.  Don’t use it as a storage place otherwise it will become an eye sore rather than a welcome mat.

Creating the right porch design and porch furniture is critical for proper curbside presentation. The porch should serve as a transitional space into the home and be a pleasant place to relax and spend time with family and friends. Keep in mind that it presents the first impression of what the home and occupants are all about. In essence, the porch is a preview of the home and what’s inside.

Some porches are just little portals into the house that aren’t noticed and others are large spaces with a view. Many large porches are really an extension of the homes living space. A porch design that functions as transitional space into the house itself should be balanced with the overall style and size of your home.

Don’t make it too small or too large. Farmer’s porches are ideal as they may just be on the front of the home or rap around the corners. They should be wide enough (10 to 12 feet) to avoid overcrowding with furniture. Porches that are too small look crowded even though they have nothing on them.

The roof of the porch should be high enough as to not block a lot of the natural light from entering the windows. A dark porch appears more like a tunnel than a proper entry point to the home. Fixed skylights are often installed in porch roofs with low roof lines to provide additional light.

When decorating the porch consider the roadside appeal and the functionary of the porch. It should never be a catchall for old, tattered or worn out furnishings. Keep the porch looking fresh and limit the decorations to a conservative décor.
