Buying a Shed Verses Building a Shed

Backyard Sheds

Introduction: If your garage is getting smaller because it is quickly filling up with equipment, or other items, then a stylish backyard storage shed will offer you the extra space you need. If there’s anything better than buying a backyard shed it is building a shed yourself as a DIY project. Buying a shed verses building a shed has both positive and negative points.

A shed is the simplest solution for resolving storage problems. You can buy a shed that is all built and set it in your backyard or you can build a shed yourself.

It is much cheaper to build a shed yourself. Most home improvement centers sell readymade sheds or shed construction kits. Building a shed is not very difficult. Most DIY homeowners can build a backyard shed in a couple of weekends.

The most common shed size is 8 X 10 feet because in most towns a building of this size doesn’t require a building permit. The cost of a ready built 8 X 10 shed can run as high as $1200. These sheds are made from wood, vinyl or metal. You can build the same shed from wood for approximately $750 or less depending how exotic your shed plan is.

Standard shed plans are available on line free of charge. They also include a building material list that contains all the material and hardware to complete the shed. If you add more than one window and door the cost will rise significantly.

Before beginning determine what you are going to use the shed for. It it’s to provide additional store space you can get away at a much lower cost than if the shed is going to be a small hobby house or a play house for children.

Store bought sheds are a practical if you don’t have the time or skills to build one yourself.  Most of the store bought sheds are made of metal such as aluminum or galvanized steel and they come in a wide variety of colors. Vinyl and metal sheds are made with wall panels.  These sheds are relatively maintenance free.

Wooden sheds with one or two small windows are the most popular shed because they look stylish and can be easily matched with the main house. A wooden shed looks more like a small house and can be finished to compliment the main house. They are relatively inexpensive to build and the basic design can be altered to suit your needs.

When it comes to deciding to buy or build your own shed, shop around and compare prices before buying. But if you choose to build your own shed you will save a lot of money and have what you want.
