Building a Single Car GarageBuilding a Garage
Overview:
If you are just
staring out in life or only have one car, a small
one car garage may be the ideal choice for you.
Frequently garages are built oversized to
accommodate more than one car however; many people
have only one car and don’t require an oversized
garage.
If you don’t need a garage larger than a one car
garage you will save a lot of money by building a
single car garage.
If you're building a small garage for just one
vehicle, single car garage plans is by far the most
affordable and easiest to find and build. You can
purchase a plan on the internet or from your local
home improvement store for a reasonable price.
There are many garage plans free on the Internet or
you can purchase them for under $40. Often times
you can purchase a complete garage kit and assemble
it yourself.
Building a one car garage as a DIY project
may save you a lot of money.
Before searching for a one car garage plan you
should contact your local building code offices to
make sure you can provide them with all of the
information they need. They usually require a copy
of the plan and they will be able to advise you of
local code requirements so that you do not find
your garage unacceptable after it is completed. In
addition the code officer can inform you of any
additional requirements that may not be included in
the plan.
Because of the simplicity of a single car garage it
is the easiest garage to build. Before beginning
insure that your vehicle will fit into the garage.
Measure you vehicle to find the minimum space
required with the doors, hood, and trunk open. If
you are creating your own plans, you may want to
consider contacting an architect or contractor for
additional information. In general the average
sized large car or van is about 7 X 16 feet. A
minimum debt of 24 feet and a width of 20 feet is
recommended to accommodate such things as a lawn
mower and lawn and garden tools in addition to your
vehicle.
There are many single car garage plans available on
the internet for free, and they can be found for a
reasonable cost at home improvement or hardware
stores. Remember that you will need more than one
copy of the plan. After you find your ideal garage
plan and stake out the location you'll need to get
back in contact with a building code officer and
apply for a building permit.
Once you have received permission to build your
garage you will want to build a material list. If
you plan on using a single supplier the supplier
will build you a materials listing and provide a
delivery schedule.
If you are planning to purchase a DIY kit
the kit will only include the bare bones minimum of
material and ignore things like hardware, paint and
siding. Keep in mind that an ugly garage can
decrease the value of your property and make it
more difficult to sell in the future. A well
constructed and attractive garage can increase the
value of your property. Along with hardware, paint,
and siding you will want to include the cost of
wiring and light switches and electrical outlets
and maybe even include a fancy garage door opener
or security system. Whatever type of a single car garage plan you choose you will want to insure that it is the right match for your home, car, and property. Always abide by all building code requirements when building. Having a finished garage can be a blessing but without the right information and planning before building can result in something that is less than desirable.
