Building a Shed Tips

Planning to Build a Storage Shed

Introduction: Building a backyard shed is an easy DIY home improvement project. Homeowners build sheds to store items such as ladders, lawn mowers, hand tools such as shovels and rakes and all the other things that are taking up space in the garage. Building a small shed doesn’t have to be complicated. If you can follow instructions and the shed building plans for a simple structure, you can build a shed it yourself.

Building a Shed Tips:

  1. Before beginning to build a shed determine its purpose. You might need to have a particular type of door or space arrangement to accommodate special storage needs. What you plan on storing in the building might affect the shed height and the type of roof required. Ensure that the size is adequate.
  2. If you are planning on using the shed for a work space, you may want a workbench with storage cabinets. Once you have decided what you are building the shed for you can determine the size it must be to easily accommodate the use and items that will be placed within.
  3. Plan on using standard size building material so you won’t need to do a lot of cutting and fitting. For example, if you use plywood or particleboard sheeting for your walls, it is typically available in four foot by eight foot panels. Making your walls seven feet high means more cutting and fitting.
  4. Use the best building material. Determining the best material will depend upon many factors. Some typical components are concrete blocks, dimension lumber, metal, and plywood or particleboard. Roofing is available in steel, wood, or rolled roofing materials in place of shingles.
  5. Determine if you are going to build the shed on a concrete slab or a wood structure.  Whatever methods you use ensure that the shed is firmly fastened to the base. The strength of wind and the weight of snow must be considered.
  6. If you are pouring a concrete pad, you should allow for the footings and foundation, if any, when preparing the site.
  7. Plan ahead. If the poured concrete must dry, you can’t expect to build your walls at the same time. Have the building material on site to avoid slowdowns because you have to run for more material.
  8. Plan for the tools you need to rent in time to use on the project.

When you are ready to start building the shed, the pre-planning and preparation can make the job go efficiently and quickly. Once you’ve constructed the shed, it’s important to add the finishing touches so that it is both attractive and functional.
