Building Pole Barn Structures
Pole Building Construction
Introduction: Way back in antiquity the construction of a barn was by the post and beam construction method. In later years the post and beam constructed barns gave way to a new technique for building inexpensive barns called pole barns. Pole barns are built to last for decades and are much cheaper to build than post and beam structures. They are a solid structure that provide good value and can be either left in a basic semi open design or they can be enclosed much like any other structure.
Pole construction is not limited to just barns for
livestock. They are
A pole structure is supported by poles set deep in
the ground and anchored by concrete. The poles
extend from beneath the ground to the top of the
structure to support the roof. Walls are optional
in pole structures but most have either partial or
full walls. A foundation is not required and
finished floors are optional. Pole barn structures
can be built to any size. The framing of the
structure is horizontal to the vertical post which
provides sturdy and reliable structure.
The posts and framing of pole structures are made
of wood although in some locations concrete posts
are used. The siding is usually metal or wood. The
roofs are typically made from galvanized steel
although wood plywood sheathing and shingles can be
used.
Pole construction is considered one of the most
economical ways to build barns and other out
buildings. From a builder's point of view it's one
of the simplest structures to build. The building
material is relatively inexpensive as compared to
the old post and beam structures. The poles that make up the vertical structure are often pressure-treated lumber. Either round poles, square posts or utility poles can be used. Utility poles are the most common as they are treated to be beneath ground level and will last for decades. Related articles: |
