Selecting Carpets for Stairs

Stair Carpets for Your Home

Introduction:

Selecting carpets for stairs can be a difficult decision. The right choice will add beauty and durability to your stairway. Carpeting on stairs helps to prevent slips and falls and adds a layer of insulation. In addition, stair carpeting can add color to enhance the design of your hallway.

Your first thing to consider when selecting stair carpets is how much the stairs are going to be used. If the stairs you’ll be carpeting will have high traffic volume you’re going need a heavy-duty carpet. In addition, consider if full stair carpets, stair mats or a stair carpet runner will work best.

The color of the carpet will be determined by the rest of the house. At the same time you want good visibility of the stairs in front of you. A lighter, neutral color is a good choice since they are easier to see in all kinds of different lighting. Whatever the color you’re trying to match, always go for a lighter shade for the best results. If your normal carpet is navy blue, get a slightly lighter shade for the stairs so you can actually tell you’re on stairs when you ascend or descend.

Another consideration is staining and footprints. Berber carpets are made of tightly looped fibers that hold up well against footprints and vacuums. Berber is sturdy and holds up well against heavy traffic due to its tight weave and compact fibers. It holds up well against wear and won’t cause any trips and falls.

Always select a carpet that you can be easily cleaned. Many suppliers have stain resistant carpets that make it easier to keep your floor clean of dirt and mud. Most good quality carpets can be cleaned with simple warm water and blotting which will remove most stains within a few minutes.

Consider wool carpets in high traffic areas like hallways because they hold up better than most other carpets in high traffic areas. Carpets designed for commercial buildings is a good choice as they are super heavy duty and very compact with threads.

There are carpets you definitely do not want on your stairs. Shag carpets are not recommended because they can cause people to trip and fall. Carpets that are slick and slippery are not a good choice either.

Whichever carpet you choose it must be in balance with your décor and add beauty to your home. The added layer of insulation you wind up with will help keep your home more cost efficient. Choose the color and type of carpet that is right for you and your home.
