How to Arrange Wall Hangings

Decorating With Wall Hangings

Introduction:

Decorating with wall hangings is a great way to bring color, visual texture, and variety into your home. They can be easily rearranged or replaced and fit into any budget. The challenge in decorating with wall hangings is in knowing what type will work best with your décor; how tall, how wide, how they should be arranged, and how many you should use. These are questions that can be answered with an easy logical approach. It doesn’t make any difference if you are decorating with large hangings such as wall tapestries, large wall art, or small paintings and pictures.

Here are some general guide lines to use.

Dimensions:

The “golden rectangle” is a proportion that has been identified as the most ideal. If the length is about 1.5 times the width or vice versa, the wall hangings will achieve a perfect ratio and will have a satisfying appearance whether hung vertically or horizontally.  Rectangles that fall somewhere between square and the golden rectangle may seem awkward. Wall hangings that are quite long and narrow will appear more like scrolls.

How to place and arrange wall hangings:

For convenience as well as visual appeal, hangings should be placed with a minimum of six inches from any corner, door frames or window frames.  A foot is needed between the ceiling and the top of the wall hanging. Keep in mind that having a wall hanging close to the same height as a window or door frame may look awkward. It's better to have the wall hanging be clearly above or clearly below the height of the door frame to avoid having the placement appear accidental or sloppy.

Wall hangings that are grouped in two or more can be hung closer together for a more seamless overall look. The bottom edge of the wall hanging must be aligned properly. Bottom edges that closely align to window sills, the tops of bureaus, or bookshelves may appear awkward.

How many wall hangings are appropriate:

This depends on how ornate the rest of the room decor is, the scale of the area being decorated and the wall hangings selected. Wall hangings will have more visual impact and be more elegant if at least one, preferably both, of the adjacent wall areas is clear of competing decorative articles. Remember that with wall hangings it is easier to add more than to have to remove a hanging and have to repair a marked or damaged wall.

Colors and style:

Because wall hangings are highly visible and can take up a significant amount of wall surface area, there color can really accentuate the decorating themes. It is best to choose wall hangings that have colors that are complementary to the colors present in your other furnishings. Use caution as some complimentary or near complimentary pairings can result in conflict making it difficult for the eye to process the combined effects resulting in unappealing appearance.

You don’t have to be a professional interior decorator to know how to choose wall hangings that match your furnishings and balance out the room decor. Wall hangings are a relatively low risk way of experimenting with your home decorating objectives. If necessary, create templates with cutouts for testing your ideas before actually hanging anything on your wall. With a little imagination you can come up with the right combination of wall hangings that best fit your home.
