How to Hang a Carpet

Hanging Oriental Carpets

Introduction:

Oriental carpets, often referred to as rugs, are woven from silk and / or wool to  form beautiful intricate murals that look fantastic hanging on walls. Although a wool carpet is beautiful, silk carpets are absolutely gorgeous.  These carpets do not have to be an antique carpet to be display on walls.

Most modern Oriental carpets are works of art and with good lighting their complicated artwork and design are revealed. Although they are intended to lie on the floor in areas where there is low traffic they look just as great hanging on a wall.

Once you have purchased a beautiful carpet you don'tCarpet hanging want it to face the daily challenge of being walked on and risk to spills. It is difficult to imagine that a carpet that cost many thousands of dollars should lie on the floor. Hanging it on a wall will keep it away from the dirt and traffic and the carpet will last for decades.

Instead of placing it on the floor display your investment where all of its beauty can be observed while keeping it out of harm’s way. Oriental carpets have years of history and culture in them and the skill and time it takes to make them adds more value to them. By hanging your carpet out of harm’s way will keep it just as nice as the day you bought it for years to come. The information offered below illustrates how to hang a carpet.

How to Hang a Carpet:

There are two methods to hang a carpet depending on its weight.

·       The first method is quite easy and effective for light carpets. It's important to use a strong round rod. It should be solid and constructed of either wood or metal.

·       To attach the carpet to the rod use a strip of binding tape or fabric and sew it to the whole upper edge of the carpet. Use small stitches and insure the stitches are catching the weft and warp of the carpet.

·       Put your rod through sewed on binding. The rod should be at least two inches longer than the overall width of the carpet.

·       Hang the carpet and rod on wall brackets to display it.

The second method is more time consuming but is still quite easy do. Use this method for heavier carpets.

·       Sew the binding tape or fabric into three separate sections with a gap in between them. This method will allow the carpet to be held to the wall in three places for added support.

·       Heavier carpets should be taken down from time to time to let them lie flat so that the carpet fibers can work their way back to their original form.

Never sew curtain rings to the carpet and never just attach it to the wall with nails. This will damage the carpet and will make the end of the carpet wavier and wavier over time.

Antique carpets should be displayed in full light areas but not in direct sun light where it will fade. This will keep your carpet beautiful, vibrant, and provide years of use and appreciation for its beauty.

Hanging carpets has been a normal tradition in the Eastern world for centuries. Carpets have been displayed on palace walls, in museums, and in homes of royalty for centuries. They will look great on your walls too.
