As the swing makes it’s back and forth journey you can hear the floorboards of the porch creak their own song that lulls you to sleep. Slight summer breezes make the weather more tolerable as you relax and enjoy the world around you.  

That image of a farmer’s porch swing is characteristic of a Norman Rockwell painting as well as the reality of your own little world. A beautifully crafted, hardwood swing is as functional as it is attractive. When you purchase a porch swing or patio furniture, insure that it is made of hardwood, preferably cedar or mahogany. Cedar and mahogany furniture is resistant to wood rot and insects and will last for decades in nearly any climate.

Although most porch swings come disassembled they are quite easy to put together. The DIY homeowner can assemble a swing in less than an hour. The assembly kit includes detailed instructions and all the hardware to suspend it from the ceiling. If you prefer not to hang the swing from the ceiling an A-frame porch swing will work just as well. The A-frame swing stands alone which permits you to put your swing anywhere including the patio or in the back yard. It’s a great alternative for open porches, patios and backyard enhancements.

Although the summer weather may not have arrived it’s a good time to start planning for your porch swing. Visit home improvement supply centers or garden shops to get an idea of the many designs and styles that are available. Choose one that works best with you sitting. The ideal porch swing is suspended from the porch ceiling or ceiling joist.

A farmer’s porch swing is an attractive and comforting addition to your front or back porch. They also are a nice social gathering spot for family and friends. It is a great way to get the kids to enjoy the outdoors, especially on a warm summer day.   In the evening you can enjoy the peaceful retreat of the porch with the light of the moon, the sparks of the fireflies and songs of the night creepers.

Keep in mind that a farmer’s porch swing will work just as well on the patio or in the backyard suspended from an A-frame or your favorite tree.
