Decorating and Furnishings for a Farmer’s Porch

Decorating a Farmer’s Porch

Introduction:

The farmer’s porch is a country setting in terms of house design. Decorating and furnishings for a farmer’s porch should be in a comfortable country style. The furnishings will make your porch a huge welcome mat for guess.

Evenings spent on a cozy country style porch will benefit your family in many ways. It is a great way to bond with your family members, neighbors and friends and to catch up with each others' lives. Chatting time with children on the front porch is a wonderful way to teach them the value of time spent with family instead of in front of a television or computer. Here are some ideas for decorating a farmer’s porch.

  1. A porch swing is an absolute must for yourPorch swing

farmer’s porch.   There is hardly any other better place to relax and enjoy the passing of time than on the farmers porch swing. As the swing makes it back and forth journey you can hear the floorboards of the porch creak their own song that lulls you to sleep.

  2. After the swing a comfortable rocking chair,

one or two, are an absolute necessity. Who doesn’t like to rock in an old style rocking chair. Many of life’s troubles can be rocked away on a porch rocking chair.

  3. Depending on the size of your porch you will need to arrange comfortable seating for your family and guests. If your porch is very large you may be able to create two or three seating areas. Wicker, rattan and wood chairs are all good choices for porch seating. Insure that you have at least two comfortable chairs on your porch; rocking chairs and wood gliders are ideal. A swing can be suspended from the ceiling at one end of the porch and other comfortable seating for the other end. You may have room for a wicker loveseat and other types of seating around the swing to create a cozy conversation area. Park benches are another useful type of seating for country porches.

  4. Place wooden, wicker or wrought-iron side tables next to the seating areas so your guest will have a place to set a cool beverage or cup of coffee. Another option is a patio table and matching chairs if the porch is large enough. A setting such as this will make a perfect place to have an outdoor picnic, afternoon tea or sandwiches for lunch with your friends.

  5. For small children you may wish to have a kid size table and chairs. Kid size tables provide easy accessible places for small ones to color or have lunch, especially on a rainy day when they cannot leave the porch.

  6. Use weatherproof cushions on your loveseat, porch swing and rocking chairs. They add comfort and can be kept outside all year. Decorate your front porch with old-fashioned and vintage looking decor such as a painted milk can, a butter churn, tea-cart or an old washboard with dried or silk flowers attached to it. When purchasing this type of décor insure it has a waterproof sealer. If it is not weatherproof spray or paint a weatherproof finish on it yourself.
