Fireplace Mantel Construction

Introduction:

A vital part of a fireplace that makes it attractive is the mantel. The fireplace mantel is the upper portion of the fireplace above box opening.  Most often the mantel is made for decorative purposes and is created with a shelf where various home accessories are displayed such as picture frames, flower vases, decorative plates and scented candles. And of course it is where we hank the stocking on Christmas eve.

Many different fireplace mantel construction designs can be used for building a fireplace mantel. They can be constructed of wood, stone, brick, and trimmed with decorative moldings and other intricate design features. They also can have legs (pilasters) or they can feature a bookcase or a certain type of storage area on each side. Raised or recessed panels can also be included in the mantel design. For very large homes mantels can be designed in a way that they can extend up to the ceiling with alcoves for video screens or art pieces.

Fireplace MantelIn deciding on a mantel design first determine the style you want. Fireplace mantel construction is of two major types. Some are built in place as either hanging on the wall structure or on the stone or brick facade of the fireplace while others are built as a separate unit and then installed. The unit type is referred to as free standing mantels which are secured to the wall with strong fasteners. Mantels that are built in place are usually very heavy and require having the right structures such as blocks of wood to support the weight.

The mantel size should be in balance in accordance with the size of the room. For spacious rooms with high ceilings a large mantel works best. If the room and fireplace surround is small the mantel should not be too large.

If you are building a new home with a fireplace that will include a mantel determine the sequence in doing the work from your contractor. Some masons prefer to work on the masonry first before installing the mantel and others do it in reverse.

The mantel should be we well constructed so it holds the intended weight of your displaced items. The mantel must be strong enough to display precious personal items including antiques and family heirlooms. The mantel shelf should be deep enough to accommodate and secure the items you will display there.

Fireplace mantel construction can be a DIY project for homeowners who want to be hands on when it comes to designing their spaces. Constructing a wood mantel is easier and less messy because of the lightweight material involved. Attaching the mantel involves only some attachment screws to fasten it to the wall.

Fireplace mantel construction takes careful planning and a little research to help you determine the specific design you want.  This applies not only to a DIY project but also for a contractor. With some knowledge of building a mantel you can make inputs on how you want your fireplace mantel to look before work starts.
