How to Test a Smoke Detector

Test your smoke detectors at least once a year to insure that they are working.

Introduction:

Most all homes have smoke detectors or smoke alarms to alert the occupants in the event there is a fire in the home. Unfortunately we take them for granted and ignore them.  They are attached to the ceiling out of sight and out of the way and are neglected. Most homeowners and their families will never use one for the emergency that they are intended to alert us to. Consequently not having an operational smoke detector is often fatal to the occupants.

It isn't enough to have a smoke detector, it must be operational and that is up to the homeowner. Homeowners should check every smoke detector in their house at least once every month to determine if it is working. The operational check applies to battery operated models as well as hard-wired models.

How to test a smoke detector:

·       You can test each unit by pressing and holding the test button for a second or two until it sounds. It can be easily done by either standing on a step stool or by using a broom handle to gently press the test button.

Smoke detector batteries should be replaced at least once a year. Choose a date to help you remember, such as when you set the clocks back or forward or on New Year’s Day.

Hard wired electric smoke alarms also use a battery as a back up to keep them powered in case of a power failure. These models should also have their battery replaced every year.

Do not test the alarm by blowing smoke into it. The smoke entering the unit will reduce its effectiveness in the future. All smoke detectors, both battery and electric should be replaced every 10 years.

There are two types of smoke detectors, photoelectric and ion. They are both very effective. The best choice is one that uses both techniques.  In addition to smoke detectors every home should have a carbon monoxide detector. Some smoke detector models incorporate carbon monoxide detection.
