Saving Energy with Ceiling Fans
|
Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans are great features
to have in the home. Not only do they provide air
circulation in warm weather they also work just as
efficiently during cold weather to save you money
by reducing your energy use. There are many styles
available, so you should be able to find something
that matches your decor.
Ceiling fans are available in many different sixes,
designs, and styles. It is quite easy to find a
ceiling fan to fit any setting or décor. There are
a few things you should keep in mind when selecting
a ceiling fan if saving energy is important to you.
Ceiling fans work by creating air movement which
cools people by evaporating moisture from their
skin. The cooling effect makes it possible to raise
the thermostat. The way to save energy with a
ceiling fan is to operate it along with air
conditioning. This will allow you to set the
thermostat higher because the fan will circulate
the air through the room.
Every degree that you raise the air conditioning
thermostat over 78 degrees saves approximately
three to six percent on cooling costs. Keep in mind
that you will not see any energy savings if you use
the ceiling fan without raising the
air-conditioning thermostat setting.
When shopping for a ceiling fan insure you buy the
right size for the room. The best size for you
depends on the room you plan on putting it in. A
smaller fan works well in smaller rooms while a
larger fan is needed in very large rooms. Longer
rooms may need two fans at each end to adequately
cool the area.
Saving energy with ceiling fans is possible in
winter as well as summer. A reversible ceiling fan
can save heating costs by pushing the air down from
the ceiling toward the floor. This will allow you
to lower your thermostat when using the ceiling fan
along with your heating system.
For every degree you lower the heating
thermostat you reduce heating costs four to seven
percent.
Fans are very economical and efficient because they
don't use any more electricity than the modern
light bulb. Large ceiling fans such as a 56 inch
fan only uses 100 watts of power. The smaller
ceiling fans such as a 36 inch fan uses only 55
watts of power. Most ceiling fans are relatively inexpensive to purchase, although you can find some models that are very expensive. At most home improvement supply centers the staring price is approximately $45 for a one way ceiling fan. A reversible ceiling fan with lights is more expensive but is well worth the investment. It won't take very long to recover the investment you make in the ceiling fan with the energy savings you accumulate. Related articles:
