How to Replace a Light Dimmer Switch

Replacing a Dimmer Light Switch

Introduction:

Like all things light switches, including dimmer switches, wear out and need replacing. There really is no need to call an electrician to replace a dimmer switch. Most DIY homeowners can replace a dimmer switch in approximately fifteen minutes. All you need is a few common household tools to perform this task. It only consists of removing the switch cover plate and disconnecting and reconnecting two pairs of wires.

Tools required:

·       Circuit tester

·       Replacement dimmer switch

·       Common screwdriver

·       Wire nuts

How to replace a light dimmer switch:

1.    First turn off the power to the circuit at the main circuit breaker panel. Test to make insure it's off.

2.    Remove the switch's cover plate. The cover plate is the piece of plastic covering the switch and switch box.

3.    Remove the two screws that hold the switch inside the switch box.

4.    Pull the old switch out of the box with your hand. The switch should come out a few inches exposing the wires.

5.    Disconnect the wire nuts connecting the wires coming out of the wall and attach to the old dimmer switch's wires.

6.    Install the new dimmer switch by match the two wires from the wall with the two wires on the dimmer switch.

7.    Firmly attach a wire nut to each pair using wire nuts. Make sure the wire nuts are screwed on firmly and that no bare copper is exposed.

8.    Give each wire a light tug to make sure the wires are secured in the wire nuts.

9.    Mount the new switch into the wall and install the two mounting screws.

10. Screw the cover plate back on.

11.Turn on the power at the main circuit breaker panel.

That is how to replace a dimmer light switch.
